Asthma sufferers know how terrible it can be to suffer from an attack — especially if it hits in the middle of the night. Chronic asthma sufferers are often treated with steroids, but everybody knows that the long-term use of steroids can also be hazardous.

Fortunately, there are safe and natural remedies you can use to control your asthma. For example, load your daily diet with Vitamin C and zinc. The juice of one whole lime mixed with a glass of warm water can effectively control asthma, especially if you drink this after meals. Lemons and oranges are some other citrus fruits that you can eat in abundance to keep asthma under control.

Red meats contain plenty of zinc. Then again, these should not be excessively consumed as too much consumption of red meats can lead to other health problems. Zinc is also found in oysters, nuts, whole grains and dairy products.

Honey is also another basic kitchen item that can control asthma. Always a lifesaver, honey can cure a lot of diseases. Cuts and burns can be treated with honey. Cough and colds also respond to honey, so it’s not surprising to know that this miracle kitchen item can help control asthma. If you are under asthma attack, simply breathe into a jar of honey.

While coffee may have plenty of other health benefits, you must know that coffee, however, is the worst enemy of asthma. So you should also avoid drinking coffee or taking caffeine products as much as possible; better yet, slash out coffee drinking in your daily routine. Empty your kitchen cabinet of any supplies of coffee, and cross it out of your list when doing your groceries.

Apart from all these, engage in physical and deep breathing exercises to improve lung health. Go for long walks in the park, jog around your subdivision, and do these on a regular basis. Singing is also one way of improving lung health, as is swimming.

Finally, since asthma is most often triggered by certain allergens, try to steer yourself away from these allergens. Avoid exposure to dust, smoke, pollens, and similar other allergens that can cause asthma attacks.
