Diaper Rash
Diaper rash is a form of dermatitis on the buttocks, genitals, lower abdomen, and thigh folds of an infant or toddler. It is an inflammation and skin irritation caused by eruptions in the skin.
Symptoms
There are red rashes on the diaper regions of the infant’s tender skin. This types of rash are usually seen around the edges of the diaper, at the waist and leg bands. It accompanied by the infant’s crying if they are uncomfortable at the buttocks area.
In cases of yeast dermatitis, there are red bumps distinguished by borders and satellite lesions may occur around the edges.
Impetigos are bacterial infections that produce blisters that oozes and crust.
Causes
Primary cause is prolonged skin contact with irritants such as moisture, chemical substance from diaper materials, and friction.
Irregular diaper changers left the skin prone to frequent contact with urine and feces, which in turn, produces urine ammonia that damages the skin and develops irritation in the perianal area. Consequently, natural oils are stripped away, stratum corneum, or the outer layer of skin is damaged, making it susceptible to bacterial or yeast infection.
The infant’s diet affects the stools’ acidity. Most breast-fed infants are less susceptible to diaper rash.
Home Remedies
Change the infant’s diapers regularly according to the child’s toilet routine and training.
Avoid using wet diapers for wetness is the main cause of diaper rash. Air dry or pat dry the diaper area as much as possible.
Discontinue oral medication if allergic reaction occurs.
Apply coconut oil around the buttocks area to prevent the onset of rashes.
Diets
Breast-feeding is the best remedy to prevent diaper rashes. Feed the infant with a balance of breast milk and semi-solid foods.
Other Treatments
Shark liver oil or cod liver oil is an effective abrasive for an inflamed skin in the buttocks area
