Fever
Fever is a condition wherein the body temperature reaches the higher than normal (37.8ºC). Fever is not a disease, but rather, a symptom of an underlying medical condition.
Symptoms
Most common symptom is an abnormal rise in body temperature. Patient reaching temperature higher than 102ºF is considered to have fever.
Other symptoms include loss of appetite, body weakness, dehydration, red eyes, headache, muscle aches and quivering.
Causes
Diseases that can cause fever are cancer, cold, cough, flu, malaria, melioidosis, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, and viral hepatitis.
Side effects from taking prescribed medicines especially for seizures or hypertension also generates fever.
Home Remedies
Water: Drinking lots of water will lower the body’s temperature. It will also replace back the body fluid loss.
Fenugreek: Roast some fenugreek seeds. Dry it and ground it into fine powder. Boil 2-3 teaspoon of this powder. Strain water and add a drop of ghee in it. Drink accordingly for immediate reduction of high body temperature.
Basil leaves: Sweet basil juice is quite effective in relieving fever. Drink a glass twice or thrice a day.
Linden flower: Boil 1 tablespoon of linden flower in 1 cup of water. Drink while still warm.
Willow bark. Prepare a teacup out of will bark. It has some aspirin-like substance that reduces fever. Take few sips while drinking it. Black elder is an excellent substitute if you prefer other ingredients.
Brew willow bark tea and drink it by taking small sips. Willow bark has some aspirin related compound. If you are not comfortable with it then use black elder.
Ginger: For mild fever, have a complete bed rest for 20 minutes while covering the patient with a blanket. Ground 10 gm of raisin and ginger. Boil it in 200 ml water until it lowers down to 50 ml. Strain well and give it to the patient with mild fever.
Diets
Prepare foods that are easily digestible such as liquid foods. This includes vegetable soups.
Fresh fruits, boiled or steamed vegetables, honey and yogurt are also highly recommended.
Drink fresh fruit juices.
Drinking cow’s milk in small doses 2-3 times a day also brings healthy benefits.
When preparing khichdi, add some spices such as coriander, cumin seeds, ginger, salt and turmeric.
Avoid heavy foods like chicken, fish, fried and fast foods and also raw foods.
Other suggestions
Always take complete bed rest.
Take cold baths instead of taking aspirin in cases of children getting a fever.
Do not overexert the patient by moving relentlessly and doing strenuous physical exercises.
