Flatulence
Flatulence is a ‘flatus’ or the emanation of mix gases from the lower intestine through the anus. Nitrogen is the primary types of gas that are release. The presence of foul odor that usually accompanies flatulence is due to the existence of bacteria and feces in the rectum.
Symptoms
There is a feeling of discomfort after a given occurrence of flatulence. It usually comes in a vibrating or pitching sound depending on the sphincter muscle in the anal. Similarly, bloating, belching and pain in the abdomen are felt due to the excessive expulsion of gas.
Causes
Aerophagia, or the act of swallowing air, is the primary cause for flatulence. It may be a form of an individual’s habit. While the oxygen present in the air is duly absorbed by the body, the nitrogen gas is poorly absorb in the mucous lining, thus being expelled in the form of a flatus gas.
Bacterial infection in the intestines, constipation, digestive tract disorders such as gastroenteritis, excessive fiber and malt consumption, and unsanitary food or water intake are some of the factors that cause flatulence.
Diets
Avoid beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and yeast-containing foods such as breads and cheese for they account to production of flatus gases.
Foods such as bananas, citrus, eggs, grapes, hard cheese, meat, peanut butter, potatoes, carbohydrate-rich oats, non-carbonated beverages and yogurt all help produce bacteria-causing flatulence.
Avoid foods containing too much fat for they are responsible for creating huge amount of carbon dioxide, which by then released as a flatus gas. It also produces lightly colored loose stools at the same time.
Flatus odors are also caused by sulfur coming from proteins and amino acids-containing foods that are being digested in the intestines.
Continuous bloating accompanied by flatulence may undermine serious medical condition such as colorectal cancer.
Home Remedies
Ginger: Mix 1/2 tsp of ginger powder, a pinch of asafoetida and a pinch of rock salt in a cup of warm water. Drinking this mixture will lessen the occurrence of flatulence.
Brandy: Before bedtime, drink a mixture of 2 tsp of brandy in a cup of warm water.
Lime: Slice some fresh ginger and soak in limejuice. Chew on these slices after every meals.
Honey: Put a drop of dill oil in a tsp of honey. Take it immediately after each meal.
Pepper: Mix 1 tsp of grounded pepper, 1 tsp of ginger and 1 tsp of green cardamom seeds. Add 1/2 tsp of this mixture to water. Drink after 1 hour after meal.
Peppermint: Chewing peppermint after a meal will reduce the risk of getting flatulence, and gets rid of its accompanying bloating and abdominal pain. Peppermint contains menthol substances that ease the pressure of the intestinal muscles. You can also try mixing peppermint oil with caraway oil for optimum relief of abdominal pains.
Other suggestions
Take smaller meals instead of the usual three. Also, avoid foods that contains large amount of essential and mono unsaturated fats
Chewing food into bits and pieces is a great help for easy digestion. Don’t swallow down food as a whole.
Do physical exercises to exercises stomach muscles. It will also aid in proper bowel movement and lowers the production of bacteria that causes flatulence.
