Remedies to Keep Your Liver Healthy Naturally

August 18, 2008 Liver No Comments

The liver is one of the largest and the most important organs in the body. Its primary function is the detoxification of toxins that get into your body through the mouth, nose, and skin. A healthy liver, therefore, can keep you from getting sick, and help you achieve well-being in the process.

Unfortunately, the liver is also one of the most abused. Taking too much antibiotics, eating too much fats, and drinking too much alcohol can cause liver breakdown leading to potentially life-threatening diseases such as liver cancer and liver cirrhosis. It is essential that you take measures to keep your liver healthy, and you can do this in several ways.

First, limit your intake of alcohol. While drinking red wine is good for the heart, too much of it or any alcoholic drink for that matter can be damaging to your liver. Avoid fatty foods, too, because they don’t do any good to your liver at all. Instead, have in your diet an abundance of fruits and vegetables, particularly, the bright red, yellow, purple and green ones because they are rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants. Eating raw garlic is also beneficial to your liver’s health.

Certain herbs can be hepatotoxic, and you have to be careful with the herbal meds you take. One of the most recommended herbal remedies is milk thistle or Silybum marianum. Milk thistle has been used in ayuverdic medicine for many hundreds of years already. Many studies have been conducted as to its effects on liver function, and the results were, reportedly, extraordinary. Milk thistle has plenty of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, and these explain its role in reducing the degree of symptoms of liver damage and in restoring the health of the liver.

Engage also in physical exercises to keep yourself physically fit and trim, and avoid exposure to chemicals and aerosol sprays because they can be toxic to your liver.

You do not have to spend a lot of money to have a healthy liver. You can do it naturally by adjusting your diet, lifestyle and by using alternative herbs like milk thistle.
