Botulism
Botulism is a rare case of poisoning but it causes serious illness caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
Botulinum toxin can be used in positive way in just very small amount through the process called BOTOX, which reduces facial wrinkles through preventing contraction of muscles beneath the skin
Causes of Botulism
Botulism is caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It produces a toxin called botulinum that affects the nerves and paralyzes muscles.
Two way of causing botulism:
- Ingesting the botulinum toxin or food borne botulism
- Infection with the bacterial spores or infectious botulism
Symptoms of Botulism
Botulism is severe, sometimes fatal food poisoning caused by ingestion of food containing botulinum toxins
A symptom of botulism usually appears between 8 - 36 hours after consuming contaminated food.
Botulism symptoms include:
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Vomiting
- Lethargy
- Dry mouth
- Blurred vision
- Slurred speech
- Muscle weakness
- Drooping eyelids
- Abdominal cramps
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Progressive weakness with paralysis
- Breathing difficulty that may lead to respiratory failure
Treatment / Home Remedies for Botulism
Since botulism is a serous condition it is recommended to seek doctor’s attention.
Antibiotics should be avoided because of the risk of neuromuscular blockade
Maintain adequate oxygen supply, which may require a ventilator and close monitoring
Prevention of Botulism
Never inject illegal street drugs
Sterilize by boiling all utensil even just once a week
Avoid tasting food especially those from a from a bulging can
Avoid eating food with bad odors especially if it’s from the can.
Always practice proper hygiene in canning or preserving food products
