Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic form of diabetes wherein there is an insufficient production of insulin from the pancreas that prevents the body from absorbing glucose formation into the body cells.

Screening tests are done 2 hours every meal to determine blood glucose level. Normal sugar content is 80-120 mg per 100 ml of blood. Diabetic levels are above 160 mg per 100 ml of blood.

    Types of Diabetes:
Type 1: Also called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (or IDDM), occurs when the pancreas produces little, or no insulin. It is commonly present during childhood or adolescence stage. Patients diagnosed with this type needs to take insulin injections everyday.

Type 2: Also known as non-insulin dependant diabetes mellitus (or NDDM), is the most common and milder form of diabetes. Adults that are overweight and over the age 40 are susceptible to this type. This is the case where the patient can control diabetes through diet and oral medication. Insulin injections are occasionally prescribed to keep up with their normal insulin levels.

    Symptoms
Generally, there are recurrent thirst, hunger and frequent urination. There is weight loss evident for Type 1, and obesity for Type 2.

Blurred vision, weight loss, fatigue, nausea, and lower resistance to infection are some of the other symptoms.

It is a chronic disease that causes serious health complications such kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, and blindness if not treated properly.

    Causes
In Type I diabetes, an autoimmune response is believed to be triggered by a virus or another microorganism that destroys the cells that produce insulin

In Type II diabetes, age, obesity, and heredity play a role.

    Home Remedies
Bitter Gourd: Bitter gourd contains a hypoglycaemic or ‘plantinsulin’, which helps lower sugar levels in the blood and urine. Drink juice from 4-5 karela fruits every morning on an empty stomach, or mix its powdered form in your food. You can also boil it in water and drink it afterwards.

Indian Gooseberry: Mix 1 tablespoon of Indian gooseberry juice with 1 cup of bitter gourd juice. Take it everyday for 2 months. Indian gooseberry is rich in vitamin C and helps lower blood sugar.

Jambul fruit: Mix 1 teaspoon of powdered jambul seeds in 1 cup of milk or water, or ½ cup of curd. Take it twice daily. The seeds contain a glucoside ‘jamboline’ which converts starch into sugar and increases the glucose production.

The inner bark of jambul tress can be used as treatment for diabetes. Dry some inner bark and then burn it to produce white-colored ashes. Strain it then bottle it. Take 10 gm of jambul ash with water in the morning on an empty stomach, 20 gm in the afternoon and in the evening 1 hour after every meal.

Another technique is to mix equal parts of amla, jamun and bitter gourd powder. Take 1 teaspoon of this mixture once or twice a day.

Grapefruit: Eat a liberal amount of grapefruits. If you have high sugar content, eat at least 3 grapefruits 3 times a day. If you have lower sugar content, or just wanted to prevent an onset of diabetes, eat 3 grapefruits in a day.

Fenugreek: Take 25-100 gm of fenugreek seeds daily to reduce the levels of glucose, serum cholesterol, and triglycerides. It can also prevent hyperglycaemia.

Bengal Gram: Taking liberal amount of Bengal gram extract enhances glucose production and insulin requirement will be reduced to about 20 units per day.

Black Gram: Mix 2 tablespoons of germinated black gram with 1 teaspoon of honey and ½ cup of fresh bitter gourd juice. Take it once daily for 3-4 months. Cut your carbohydrate intake while under this treatment. It’s a very effective remedy even for severe cases of diabetes.

Mango: Soak 15 gm of fresh mango leaves in 250 ml of water overnight. Take the extract every morning to treat mild diabetes. Or you can also dry the leaves, then grind it into powder form. Store and preserve the powder for future application. Take ½ teaspoon of this powder twice a day when use as treatment.

Parslane: Take 1 teaspoon of parslane seeds with ½ cup of water everyday for 3-4 months. It will increase insulin production, hence, helps in curing or preventing diabetes.

Other vegetables: String beans, cucumber, onion, and garlic can help prevent this condition. String bean tea is also helpful.

    Diets
Diet, oral hypoglycaemic drugs and insulin are the general methods of treatment according to the severity of the conditions. Mild cases can be controlled by diet alone. Severe cases needed strictly regulated diet and insulin injections.

A diabetic should follow a diet consisting of low carbohydrates, low fat & moderate protein. Egg yolks, red meats, and whole milk contain invisible amounts of fats so they should be avoided. Replace them with egg whites, de-skinned chicken and skimmed milk instead. Limit your amount of butter, ghee and oil for they contain little quantity of fats. Too much protein will lead to kidney problems.

Whole legumes, whole-wheat products, oats, and vegetables that are high in fiber should also be taken. Restrict wheat flour intake.

Salads can be consumed in any quantities but high fat salad dressings should be avoided.

Eat fresh fruits such as apples or pears, as recommended by your dietician. Take it 2 hours after every meal and not during meal. Also, avoid fruit juices.

    Other Treatments
Do light exercises such as jogging, swimming or brisk walking regularly to help keep your body fit.

Take regular meals even after insulin injections or oral anti-diabetic drugs.

Follow your drug doses unless otherwise stated by your physician.

    Take urine tests regularly.

Avoid extremely high and low blood sugar levels by eating your meal on time. Eat snacks if you’re doing physical exercises or if your blood sugar is low

Have midnight snack if you’re under insulin or diabetic pill treatment. Take it in normal servings so as not to raise your blood sugar level.
