Edema (US) also known as œdema (UK), is a condition wherein there is a disproportionate buildup of fluids in the circulatory system or in tissues between the body’s cells. It slows down the healing process, weakens the immune system, and disrupts the body’s blood circulation. Edema itself is a sign of the body’s discomfort due to an unknown disease or illnesses.

Symptoms
Generally, symptoms are observed as high blood pressure, increase pulse rate, weight gain, swollen hands, neck, eyelids and legs.

Other conditions that causes swelling includes blood clotting, inflammation, blocked lymph channels and varicose veins.

Causes
Other body illnesses also lead to edema. They are anemia, heart failure, immobility, liver and kidney diseases, menstrual cycles, malnutrition, pregnancy, starvation, and thyroid disease.

Healthy individuals are also at risk of this edema anytime, although they can be treated easily when given proper attention.

For some cases, excessive heat from hot weather conditions can also cause edema.

Home Remedies
Mustard: Rub mustard oil in affected areas for effective remedy. You can also soak 2 teaspoons of mustard seeds in water and apply the solution to it afterwards.

Apple cider vinegar: Applying apple cider vinegar to the body helps remove excess fluid in the body cells and cavities, which is the primary cause of edema.

Diets
Avoid salty foods for they retain water in the body rather than dispose them.

Low-carbohydrate foods are recommended for they have low water content.

Eat protein-rich foods and those that contains fatty acids or oils.

Succulent fruits and vegetables should be avoided for they increase the fluid level in the body.

Avoid sodium intake for they makes medicines ineffective.

Other Suggestions
Regular physical exercises will help burn excess fats and fluids in the body.

Quit smoking and drinking alcoholic drinks.

Rest your swollen feet by putting them atop a soft pillow.
