Gingivitis
Gingivitis is a periodontal disease that is characterized by an inflammation and swelling of the gums due to poor oral hygiene. If mistreated, it can lead to serious dental problems such as periodontitis, and bone and teeth loss. Gum disease during their initial stage are rarely painful so the risk of getting gingivitis are very high.
Symptoms
Gingivitis is experienced when there gums are painfully red and swollen, and can cause minor bleeding when brushing. Bad breath and slight distaste in the mouth are also some of the symptoms of gingivitis.
Causes
Food particles and plaque accumulated in between the gums and teeth produces bacteria that inflames the mouth and causes gingivitis.
Other causes include taking prescribed drugs, hormonal changes during pregnancy and puberty, malnutrition and fungal or viral infections.
Home Remedies
Salt: Mix a pinch of salt in a glass of lukewarm water. Use this mixture as mouthwash to reduce the swelling in the mouth.
Anti-bacterial mouthwash: Anti-bacterial mouthwashes commercially available will also help reduce gingivitis.
Clove: Rub clove oil in your gums. You can also rub a whole piece of clove and keep it inside your mouth if clove oil is not available.
Essential oils: Mouthwash toothpaste containing essential oils in their ingredients such as sage oil, peppermint oil, menthol and chamomile tincture are excellent remedy for gingivitis.
Diets
Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, plus a fiber-rich diet.
Take plenty of vitamin C in foods or supplements to improve gum health.
Avoid syrups, sodas, sugary products, white rice & flour.
Stay away from sodas and sweet fruit juices.
Other suggestions
Make regular dentist appointments. Have a thorough cleaning of your teeth and gums to remove the plaque.
Maintain a clean oral hygiene once treated.
Use floss aside from brushing your teeth. It will get rid of the dirt thoroughly.
Avoid getting stress out for it also contributes to the accumulation of plaque.
