Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is an intestine disorder that attacks all age group but mainly those who are middle-aged. It also commonly attacks women.
Symptoms
Abdominal pains, bloating and stomach discomfort are primary symptoms of IBS. However, it may vary depending on the environment and body type of a person. It may come temporarily, or may come back for chronic cases. It may go worse for women having their menstrual periods.
Other symptoms are constipation, abdominal cramping, diarrhea, irregularity in bowel movement and mucus presence in the stool.
Causes
Exact causes are not yet identified. Theory states that people suffering from IBS have sensitive colons than normal. Cramping or diarrhea is experienced due to muscle contraction after meals. This may also be due to sensitive nerve endings during bowel movements.
Home Remedies
Peppermint: Take peppermint oil capsules coated with enteric.
Herbs: Chamomile, lemon balm, rosemary and valerian herbs have antispasmodic properties that make them effective remedy against IBS.
Ginger: To reduce inflammation of the stomach, drink ginger tea or eat raw ginger.
Amla: Eat amla herbs for those suffering from hyperacidity and indigestion.
Diets
Drink at least 8 glasses of water everyday to calm the intestine.
Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and fiber-rich foods to stimulate digestive tract functions.
Avoid fatty foods, caffeine and carbonated drinks.
Eat few small meals than the regular 3 meals a day.
Eat carbohydrate-rich foods such as rice and pasta.
Other suggestions
Avoid stress by exercising regularly.
Avoid using laxatives more often than necessary.
