Pediculosis is commonly known as lice infestation. These 3 types of lice are: Pediculus humanus capitis (head louse), Pediculus humanus corporis (body louse), and Pthirus pubis (pubic louse). Lice go though 3 stages of life forms – nit, lymph and adult. They mostly last for 30 days. They have a survival strength for more than 2 days if rid off the body.

Symptoms
Head lice infestation causes itching, crusting, and redness of the scalp. Repetitive scratching of lice bites may cause skin infections such as neck lumps on the neck and behind the ears.

Causes
Direct contact with an infected person’s head is the primary means of getting head lice. Sharing personal belongings and object such as pillows and hats with an infected person will also make you prone to parasitical lice.

Body lice are transmitted through direct contact with an infected person, not bathing for several days, and wearing unwashed clothes. It is a condition mostly prevalent in underdeveloped countries.

There is also the Pubic lice that are transmitted through direct sexual intercourse. Even the use of contraceptive does not provide any protection from getting pubic lice.

Home Remedies
Vinegar: Wash your hair with vinegar to kill the parasite within two days.

Coconut oil: Apply coconut oil after shampooing and conditioning.

Tea tree oil: Place 10-15 drops of tea tree oil in your favorite shampoo brand that you use everyday.

Mouthwash: Rub Listerine mouthwash in your scalp.

Mayonnaise: Apply mayonnaise in your hair and scalp. Gently brush your hair after 2 hours to kill the lice and their offspring.

Lemon: Mix lemon and butter. Apply on the hair and scalp. Leave for 15 seconds. Rinse well.

Further Suggestions
Refrain from sharing personal belongings with an infected person.

Avoid applying kerosene treatment in your head.

Avoid sexual intercourse with an infected person.
