Schistosomiasis

Schistosomiasis is an infection of parasitic worms that thrives in different part of the internal organs. It is also known as bilharzias named after Theodor Bilharz the one who first identified the parasite in Egypt in 1851. Infection is widespread in different countries around the globe although with low mortality rate.

Schistosomiasis is mostly found in the tropical or subtropical areas

This kind of parasitic infection can be contacted through contaminated water where snail as intermediate hosts breeds.

Species of schistosomes or blood fluke

  1. Schistosoma mansoni – causes intestinal schistosomiasis
  2. Schistosoma japonicum/mekongi – causes intestinal schistosomiasis
  3. Schistosoma intercalatum – causes intestinal and urinary schistosomiasis
  4. Schistosoma haematobium causes urinary schistosomiasis

Causes of Schistosomiasis

  • Drinking contaminated water
  • Swimming on contaminated water

On contact with humans, the parasite burrows into the skin and stays there till maturity, after reaching maturity in migrates into the lungs and liver until became an adult worm. When adulthood acquired it migrates into its preferred area in the body which includes:

  • Bladder
  • Rectum
  • Liver
  • Spleen
  • Lungs
  • Intestines

Symptoms of Schistosomiasis

*Symptoms varies with the species of worm and the degree of infection.

  • Coma
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Rashes
  • Amnesia
  • Headache
  • Fibrosis
  • Arteriolitis
  • Disorientation
  • Painful urination
  • Blood in Urine
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Itching (swimmer’s itch)
  • Lymph node enlargement
  • Liver and spleen enlargement

Treatment / Home remedies for Schistosomiasis

Black walnut oil:
One or two drops are sufficient enough in a glass of water, drink two times a day. Skin reactions may occur when drinking black walnut oil in water for the elimination of worms. When they are exposed to the oil, they will cease releasing toxins to protect their living environment. The toxins that are absorbed into the blood causes rashes on the skin. To avoid this condition, start out slow and increase dosage over longer periods.

Pumpkin seeds and onions mixed with soy milk:
Good remedy for almost all type of worm eradication.

Milkweed, pennyroyal and black walnut:
Mix and drink, effective for blood flukes

Cloves, goldenrod and goldenseal root.
Mix and drink, best for liver flukes infection

Cloves:
Use more cloves with every meal. Adding some to foods will help kill the eggs from parasites in the intestinal tract. Cloves added to coffee or an herbal tea adds better taste.

Apple cider:
Mix one or two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in one glass of water. Alternatively, you can take one tablespoon daily of 1 part apple cider vinegar, 2 parts apple juice, 1 part apple brandy.
Prevention for Schistosomiasis

Avoid Contaminated water
Wear protected clothing when working in contaminated water
Wash and use disinfectants after working in contaminated water
