Sacroiliitis
Sacroiliitis is a term used for inflammation of one or both of the joints that connect the lower spine to the pelvis. Characterized by pain and a severe restricted immobility. Sometimes it is accompanied by other symptoms like fever, skin conditions, and diarrhea.
Since this condition is very painful diagnoses is very much difficult and the initial treatment focuses on pain management. Sacroilitis can be confused as lower back pain or any other condition that relates to back pain.
Causes
Occurs when the sacroiliac joint between the sacrum (base of spine), and ilium (Pelvic bone) becomes inflamed or infected.
Some factors that causes sacroiliitis:
- Arthritis
- Pregnancy
- Skin infections
- Osteomyelitis
- Endocarditis
- Lifting heavy materials
- Urinary tract infections
- Intravenous drug abuse
Symptoms
Symptoms may include:
- Fever
- Bloody diarrhea
- Pain when walking
- Pain affecting hips and shoulders
- Stiffness and pain in lower back, thighs or buttocks
- Inflammation in one or both of the eyes (uveitis or iritis)
Treatment
Kava-kava:
Steep one teaspoon of kava in one cup of water, drink three to six times a day. Has muscle relaxant effect, it helps in reducing pain
Black Haw:
Steep black haw roots and drink as tea it relieves muscle spasms
Turmeric:
Put one teaspoon of turmeric juice in hot milk, drink before bedtime, it helps reducing pain
Treatment may also involve physical therapy and rest to help manage pain and stiffness
Prevention
Avoid smoking
Loose weight
Avoid sitting for long hours
Avoid lifting heavy objects
